Blogads.com
Representing ad space on 1100 blogs is no where near the cross section of the internet that google represents, nor even a sliver of the well over 50 million blogs created, the advantage of advertising with blogads.com (or an equivalent service) is in the ability to target very specific audiences. For instance, for just $20 you could run your add for a week on the "Burrito Blog", where it would be seen by approximately 8,000 loyal readers of Mexican food reviews from around the country. While probably worthless if you are advertising tennis shoes, it could be a potential bonanza if you are selling hot sauce.

Google AdWords
One of the pillars of the internet, "Adds by Google" are featured as "Sponsored Links" on Google's search engine page and as text, banner and video adds on millions of websites. Google, which brings in about 2 billion a quarter and is referred to by Bill Gates as Microsoft's only competition, provides the largest demographic spread of any advertising agency in the world. Google's method of handling add placement is by biding on key words. In a process which some refine into an art, you choose your maximum daily expenditure, your list of keywords and your maximum bid per click per key word. Since you don't pay Google until someone clicks on your add, you are guaranteed visits to your site for the money you invest. Also, since you choose the keywords, you are able to focus your adds toward your target audience.
